How to Care for Your Invisalign Aligners: The Complete Routine

Invisalign aligners are in your mouth for 20 to 22 hours every day. Over a treatment period of anywhere from a few months to two years, that amounts to an enormous amount of time for food residue, bacteria, and mineral deposits to accumulate on a surface that sits directly against your teeth and gums. How you care for your aligners determines whether they stay clear and odourless throughout treatment or become cloudy, discoloured, and unhygienic.

Good aligner care is not complicated: it becomes a natural habit within the first couple of weeks for most Invisalign patients. The Smile Creative team provides care guidance when you start treatment, and this article gives you the complete picture of everything that keeps your aligners, and your teeth, in the best possible condition throughout your Invisalign journey.

The Golden Rules of Invisalign Aligner Care

Before getting into the specifics of the routine, five habits are the foundation of good aligner care and are worth internalising from day one:

  1. Remove aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain still water
  2. Rinse your aligners with cool or lukewarm water every time you remove them
  3. Brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners after every meal
  4. Never put aligners in hot water: the heat warps the plastic and ruins the precise fit
  5. Always store your aligners in the provided case when they are not in your mouth

The Daily Routine

Morning

When you wake up, your aligners will have been in your mouth for several hours overnight. Morning is typically the right time for your first proper aligner cleaning of the day:

  1. Remove your aligners
  2. Rinse them under cool or lukewarm water to remove overnight saliva and any loose debris
  3. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of clear, unscented liquid soap, gently brush the inside and outside surfaces of each aligner. Use a different toothbrush to the one you use for your teeth
  4. Rinse the aligners thoroughly to remove all soap residue
  5. Brush and floss your teeth before reinserting the clean aligners

After meals

Every time you eat or drink something other than plain water, follow this sequence:

  1. Remove your aligners before eating or drinking
  2. Store them in your case while you eat: never wrap them in a tissue or napkin (this is one of the most common causes of accidentally throwing aligners away)
  3. After eating, rinse your mouth and brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners. If you cannot brush immediately, at minimum rinse your mouth thoroughly with water before reinserting
  4. Rinse the aligners with water before putting them back in

Evening

  1. Remove your aligners for your evening tooth brushing and flossing routine
  2. Clean the aligners thoroughly using the morning method (soft brush, clear liquid soap, rinse)
  3. Brush and floss your teeth completely before reinserting the aligners for overnight wear

Weekly Deep Cleaning

In addition to the daily routine, a deeper clean once or twice per week helps remove any mineral build-up, prevent bacterial accumulation, and keep the aligners as clear as possible:

  • Invisalign cleaning crystals: purpose-made cleaning crystals designed specifically for Invisalign aligners. Dissolve the crystals in water as directed, soak the aligners for the recommended time, then rinse thoroughly before reinserting. These are the most reliable option for deep cleaning without risking damage to the aligner material
  • Retainer cleaning tablets: retainer cleaning tablets (available from pharmacies and dental suppliers) are a widely used and effective alternative. Follow the product instructions and always rinse thoroughly after soaking
  • Denture cleaning tablets: some patients use denture cleaning tablets as a cost-effective option. They are generally safe for aligner soaking, but check with your dentist before using, as formulations vary

What Not to Do

Aligner care errors are easy to make and easy to avoid once you know about them:

  • Do not use hot water: heat warps the thermoplastic material of the aligners. Even briefly rinsing with hot water from the tap can distort the fit. Always use cool or lukewarm water
  • Do not use coloured or abrasive toothpaste on aligners: coloured toothpaste can stain clear aligners. Abrasive toothpaste creates microscopic scratches that make the aligners look cloudy and harder to clean. Use plain clear soap instead
  • Do not use mouthwash to soak aligners: many mouthwashes contain colouring agents that will stain clear aligners. Antiseptic mouthwashes with dyes are particularly risky. Do not soak aligners in mouthwash
  • Do not eat or drink (other than water) while wearing aligners: food particles get trapped between the aligner and the tooth surface, creating an ideal environment for bacteria. Coloured drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, juice) stain the aligner material and the surface of the teeth
  • Do not leave aligners out of your case when not in your mouth: aligners left on a surface are at high risk of being accidentally thrown away, knocked onto the floor, or damaged. The case takes a second to use and prevents these common accidents

Looking After Your Teeth During Invisalign

Aligner care is only half of the oral health responsibility during Invisalign treatment. Your teeth need as much attention as the aligners:

  • Brush after every meal: trapped food under aligners accelerates the risk of tooth decay. The combination of a tooth surface and the aligner pressing against it creates a sealed environment. Do not give bacteria anything to work with
  • Floss daily: Invisalign does not make flossing harder (unlike braces), which means the dental hygiene standard of daily flossing is fully achievable throughout treatment
  • Stay current with dental check-ups: regular check-ups at Smile Creative during your Invisalign treatment allow for early identification of any decay or gum changes
  • Stay hydrated: dry mouth increases the risk of decay. Sipping water throughout the day is good both for oral health and for maintaining the aligner

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my Invisalign aligners?

Rinse your aligners with cool water every time you remove them. Clean them properly with a soft toothbrush and clear soap at least twice a day (morning and evening). A deeper soak with cleaning crystals or retainer tablets once or twice a week keeps the aligners hygienic and as clear as possible throughout treatment.

Can I drink coffee with Invisalign in?

No. Coffee stains both the aligner material and the surface of the teeth when worn together. The staining from coffee, tea, and red wine can permanently discolour the clear aligners and create visible discolouration on the tooth surface beneath them. Remove your aligners before drinking any coloured or flavoured beverage. If this feels inconvenient, think of it as a minor motivation to drink more plain water. Contact Smile Creative if you have questions about managing your aligner wear during your daily routine.

What do I do if my aligner develops a smell?

A persistent odour from aligners indicates bacterial build-up that is not being removed by the daily cleaning routine. Increase the frequency of deep cleaning soaks using Invisalign cleaning crystals or retainer tablets. Ensure you are brushing your teeth before reinserting the aligners after every meal and not leaving aligners out of their case (where they dry out and bacteria multiply more readily). If the smell persists after improving the cleaning routine, mention it at your next Smile Creative appointment.
