What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves the application of a tooth-coloured composite resin material to the surface of your teeth. This material is carefully shaped and polished to match the natural contours of your teeth, resulting in a seamless and natural-looking finish.

Dental bonding can be used to:

Your dentist will discuss your condition with you to diagnose the exact cause of the issue and determine the best treatment option depending on your individual characteristics. Treatments may include:

  • Repair chips or cracks in teeth

  • Close gaps between teeth

  • Lengthen small teeth

  • Whiten discolored teeth

  • Improve uneven or jagged teeth

  • Even out misshapen teeth

How Does Dental Bonding Work?

The dental bonding procedure is simple and typically requires only one visit to our office. Here’s what you can expect during the process:

  1. Consultation: During your initial consultation, our dental team will evaluate your teeth and discuss your goals for treatment. We’ll also answer any questions you may have about the procedure.
  2. Preparation: We’ll prepare your teeth by lightly etching the surface to help the bonding material adhere properly.
  3. Application: We’ll apply the composite resin material to your teeth and carefully shape it to achieve the desired result. Once we’re satisfied with the appearance, we’ll use a special light to harden the material.
  4. Polishing: Finally, we’ll polish the bonded teeth to give them a natural-looking finish that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.

Cosmetic Dentist FAQs

Common questions Dr Karishma gets regarding cosmetic dentistry

Dental bonding can last for several years with proper care. However, the exact lifespan of the bonding material depends on several factors, including the size and location of the bonded tooth, your oral hygiene habits, and your diet. You can help prolong the lifespan of your dental bonding by avoiding hard or sticky foods, practicing good oral hygiene habits (including brushing and flossing regularly), and scheduling regular dental checkups.

Dental bonding is typically a painless procedure that requires little to no anaesthesia. However, some patients may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity during or after the procedure. This discomfort should subside within a few days, and you can take over-the-counter pain medication if necessary.

Yes, you can eat normally after getting dental bonding. However, it's important to avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods for the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure to allow the bonding material to fully harden. You should also avoid biting your nails, chewing on pens or pencils, or using your teeth to open packaging, as these habits can damage the bonding material. Additionally, it's important to maintain good oral hygiene habits (including brushing and flossing regularly) to help prolong the lifespan of your dental bonding.
